The Friends of Savin Hill Shores
In 2002, following a total rehabilitation of Savin Hill and Malibu Beaches by the state, the Friends of Savin Hill Shores was formed to ensure that the investment was protected and enhanced through advocacy and deeds. Maintenance issues are closely monitored, with deficiencies and needs conveyed quickly to DCR staff. The group sponsors an annual spring cleanup with the help of Senator Hart, the Boston Globe and other local institutions.
The Friends also take an interest in Patten’s Cove (a.k.a. the Gully) and recognize its importance to the neighborhood as a passive recreation area, while at the same time respecting the vital role it plays in the harbor ecosystem.
Along with non-profit partners like Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, the Boston Harbor Association and the Boston Natural Areas Network, the Friends have had input on major projects that would affect the waterfront parks, beaches and open spaces around Savin Hill and Columbia Point. Working to find solutions to allow modern infrastructure and private developments to coexist with the public’s right to safely access the waterfront..
The Friends are hopeful that the Dorchester Beach Festival will be a way to bring together everyone who enjoys the beach to learn about the ways we can protect and enjoy the beach environment. Please be sure to visit our booth for membership details.
